KYO AMAHAREでは、初めてとなるガラス作家・西村青さんの展覧会を開催いたします。

本展のタイトルは、西村さんが名付けてくださった「あわい」。

人とのつながり、空間との調和、そしてガラスとの向き合い方。
西村さんが日々大切にされている想いが、本展に寄せたメッセージにも込められています。

西村さんとKYO AMAHAREが関わることで生まれる「あわい」の世界観にどうぞご期待ください。

素材と私、光と空間、ガラスと空気、水と器、内と外。

様々な要素が隣り合わせに関わり合いながら私の作品が成り立っています。
吹きガラスは内包された空気を成形する技術。ガラスは空気の形を可視化する素材とも言えます。

形を見るということは空気と素材の境目を見ること。
そこには光が携わり、目や手が感覚的に拾い、素材とのやりとり、対話を繰り返して造形します。

KYO AMAHAREでは、歴史ある建物内を巡るごとに変化する景色の中に作品があり、人と空間が関わり合いながら、作品を鑑賞する場となっています。

個々の要素が単体で存在してもそこには何も生まれることはなく、関わりあうことで生じる現象や感動、こころが動く何かは、目には見えなくて分かりにくいけれど、それらのあわいにある。
そのような思いからタイトルとしました。

茶房 居雨/KYOでは4月25日（金）から始まる西村青さんの展覧会にあわせて茶会「間/Awai」を開催いたします。

空間のしつらえや茶道具に西村さんの作品を用いてみなさまをお迎えいたします。
当日は西村さんにもお席に入っていただく特別な茶会です。

「陶芸家」池田優子さんと出逢ってから海のことをより意識するようになりました。

近年届く作品に広がる海の情景からは、
池田さんがより深い場所へ辿り着こうとしている様子がうかがえます。

2年ぶりに雨晴/AMAHAREで開催する池田優子さんの展覧会のテーマは「深海」。

池田さんが海や自然に対する深い畏敬の念を胸に、ご自身と向き合いながら生み出した美しい作品とともに、心地よい初夏の時間をお過ごしください。

孤独を求めて

北海道の原生林で20年以上を過ごしてきた写真家ショウヤ・グリッグは、自然との深い対話を追求してきました。

モノクロ写真を和紙にプリントし、木炭による手描きの細部を重ねることで、伝統的な水墨画を想起させながらも、独自の表現を確立。瞬間的な風景の記録ではなく、自然との静謐な対話から生まれる永続的な体験を映し出します。

130年の歴史を持つ京町家・KYO AMAHAREで展示される作品群は、都市の喧騒を離れ、深い孤独の中で見出される自然との調和を私たちに語りかけます。

Profile |Shouya Grigg
坐忘林、SOMOZA、SHIGUCHIの 創設者・クリエイティブディレクター
1968年 イギリス・ヨークシャー生まれ。13歳の時、両親とともにオーストラリアに移住。
1994年 来日。クラブやラジオのDJを経て、札幌でデザインカンパニーを設立。

デザインだけではなく、コンセプト作りからウェブサイト制作に至るまで、デザイン全体に関わる。　同時にオーストラリアでの経験を活かし、フォトグラファーとしても活躍を始める。
2005年 ニセコにレストラン「Sekka」を開業。
2007年 ダイニング、コンドミニアム、アクティビティから成る複合施設「J-sekka」をニセコで完成させる「Sekka Brand」を立ち上げ、コンセプト作りから建設、

インテリアに至るまで細部にこだわった建築物を次々と発表。

Sekka brand=Shouya Griggとして、国内外から高い評価を受ける。
2014年 ニセコの花園地区に高級旅館「坐忘林」を開業。
2016年 ダイニング、バー＆ギャラリー「Sekka lab」をオープン。
2017年 築150年の古民家を再生した「somoza」をオープン。
2022年 「shiguchi」開業

ショウヤ・グリッグのライフスタイルそのものがアートであり、
彼の周りにある全てのものが、その目を通すことで、アートとなる。

# In Search of
Solitude

## A Solo
Exhibition by Shouya Grigg at KYO AMAHARE

In the northernmost reaches of Japan, where ancient forests meet volcanic peaks,
photographer and creative director Shouya Grigg has spent over two decades
pursuing a profound dialogue with nature. His work, presented here within the
intimate spaces of a 130-year-old Kyo-machiya, reveals moments of transcendent
connection between human consciousness and the natural world.

Grigg’s artistic
practice emerges from extended periods of solitude in Hokkaido’s pristine
landscapes. Through his lens, we witness not merely observations of nature, but
rather a meditation on the liminal spaces where human perception dissolves into
pure experience. His black and white photographs, which he describes as
“quieter” than color, strip away the superficial to reveal the
essential character of each scene.

The exhibition
represents a convergence of traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary
artistic vision. Each photograph is printed on handcrafted washi paper, its
organic fibers creating a dialogue with the images themselves. Over these
prints, Grigg applies intricate hand-drawn details and charcoal highlights,
creating layers that echo the sophisticated restraint of sumi-e painting while
establishing a uniquely contemporary visual language.

 

This layered
approach mirrors the Japanese concept of “ma” – the meaningful spaces
between things – and embodies the principle of “yugen” – the subtle
profundity that lies beneath the surface. The works exist in a space between
photography and painting, between representation and abstraction, between the
temporal and the timeless.

The historic
setting of KYO AMAHARE becomes an integral part of the viewing experience. Its
aged wooden beams and weathered walls resonate with Grigg’s exploration of
wabi-sabi – the beauty found in imperfection and the patina of time. As
visitors move through the machiya’s intimate spaces, they encounter photographs
that seem to emerge from shadows, each one inviting a moment of contemplative
silence.

Through this
exhibition, Grigg shares not just images but an invitation to experience the
kind of deep solitude that allows us to hear the whispers of the natural world.
His work reminds us that in an age of increasing disconnection from nature,
there remains the possibility of profound communion with the world around us –
if only we learn to look, and listen, with patience and presence.

These
photographs, with their delicate interplay of light and shadow, texture and
space, offer viewers more than aesthetic appreciation. They present an
opportunity to rediscover our own capacity for solitude, contemplation, and
connection with the essential rhythms of the natural world. In doing so, they
suggest that perhaps what we seek in solitude is not isolation, but rather a
deeper form of belonging.

Profile | Shouya Grigg
Zaborin/ SOMOZA/SHIGUCHI 　Founder & Creative Director

Born in 1968 in Yorkshire, England. At the age of 13, he moved to Australia with his parents.

•1994: Relocated to Japan and began his journey as a DJ in clubs and on the radio. Later established a design company in Sapporo, where he expanded his work from conceptual design to website creation, encompassing all facets of design. Concurrently, he began his career as a photographer, drawing from his experiences in Australia.
•2005: Opened the restaurant Sekka in Niseko.
•2007: Completed J-sekka, a multifaceted complex in Niseko combining dining, condominiums, and activities. He launched the Sekka Brand, focusing on crafting architectural masterpieces with meticulous attention to detail, from conceptualization to construction and interiors. As Sekka Brand or Shouya Grigg, he garnered widespread acclaim both domestically and internationally.
•2014: Opened the luxury ryokan Zaborin in Niseko’s Hanazono district.
•2016: Launched Sekka Lab, a dining, bar, and gallery space.
•2017: Revitalized a 150-year-old traditional farmhouse to create somoza.
•2022: Opened shiguchi, further expanding his creative footprint.

Shouya Grigg’s lifestyle itself is a form of art. Everything surrounding him transforms into art through his unique perspective, embodying the essence of creativity and design.

KYO AMAHAREでは初めてとなる「ガラス作家」谷口嘉さんの展覧会を開催いたします。

テーマは「うすらひ/Usurai」。

谷口さんのガラスといえば、コンクリートの型に吹き込むことで生まれる硝子のゆらぎとそれを通して生まれる影の美しさが特徴です。

本展では定番の作品はもちろんのこと、薄氷のように儚げで繊細な作品もお披露目いたします。

茶房 居雨では谷口さんにお席に入って頂く茶会「薄氷/Usurai」も開催いたしますのでどうぞご期待ください。

At KYO AMAHARE, we are proud to present our first exhibition featuring glass artist Yoshimi Taniguchi.
The theme of the exhibition is Usurai, meaning “faint, delicate.”
Known for his glass works created by blowing into concrete molds, Taniguchi’s art is distinguished by the gentle ripples of glass and the beauty of the shadows it creates.
This exhibition will showcase not only his signature pieces but also new works that are as fragile and delicate as thin ice.

Additionally, in our tea room, KYO, we will host a special tea ceremony titled Usurai with Taniguchi-san as our guest.
We eagerly look forward to your visit.
